Premio Alvise Zichichi - Libro
dell'anno 2008
(Voted Book of the Year 2008 by the Italian Chess
Federation)
A collection of John Nunn's best games from 1994 to the present day, annotated in detail in the same style as the best-selling Understanding Chess Move by Move. Throughout, the emphasis is on what the reader can learn from each game, so the book is ideal study material for those seeking to progress to a higher level of chess understanding. There is also entertainment in abundance: Nunn has a direct aggressive style, and many of his opponents in these games are ambitious young grandmasters from the generation inspired by Kasparov's dynamic chess. The book also includes all of John Nunn's compositions - problems and studies - with full solutions.
Dr John Nunn is one of the best-respected figures in world chess. He was among the world's leading grandmasters for nearly twenty years, winning four gold medals in chess Olympiads and finishing sixth overall in the World Cup in 1989. He is a much-acclaimed writer, whose works have won 'Book of the Year' awards in several countries. In 2004, 2007 and 2010 Nunn was crowned World Chess Solving Champion, ahead of many former champions.

"... easy to recommend and easy to talk about without going into detail. Nunn has the misfortune to be one of the world's best chess authors, so you can pretty much assume that any of his books are worth owning. On top of that, Nunn's previous two volumes of his games have been justifiably praised by one and all, so if I say that this third volume is at least as good as the others, that should be recommendation enough." - IM John Watson, The Week in Chess
"The authorship of Nunn himself is sufficient recommendation of the quality." - Bill Frost, www.chessdevon.co.uk
"GM John Nunn is at the pinnacle of chess writers and this book shows why. His analysis is always first-rate, and he does a good job of using words, where practical, to explain what's going on. Besides giving you 46 of his most interesting games (complete with detailed notes) played during the last third of his career, he also throws in a slew of chess problems and studies, as well as two interesting articles. I mean, what more do you want for $24.95??" - Michael Jeffreys, www.chessville.com
"This book could give months of pleasure. If you REALLY want to improve at chess, and I mean, IMPROVE, studying this book will teach you a TON." Bob Long, www.chessco.com
"Included are some exciting chapters on Studies, Problems, The state of the chess world, and a very interesting read on chess publishing. Conclusion: A great chess book!" - John Elburg, Chess Mail, chessbooks.nl
"Verdict: surely another winner from John Nunn, interesting, highly instructive, thought-provoking, and excellent value at £15.99. Rating: ***** A Top recommendation" - Phil Adams, 3Cs website
"With John Nunn you always know that you will get good value for your money, and that is certainly true of this latest book. There are many hours of wonderfully instructive reading contained within its covers, and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed." - Alan Sutton, En Passant
"The mixture of well-annotated games, theoretical novelties, useful tips, thought-provoking ideas, entertaining anecdotes, and fascinating studies, problems, and puzzles makes for an irresistible feast..." - Paul Motwani, The Scotsman
"John Nunn covers the last 10 years of his remarkable playing career in a well-organized new book, Grandmaster Chess Move by Move. The comments to his 64 best games are excellent as usual. He also includes his studies and problems." Lubomir Kavalek, Washington Post
"An excellent read and one to which I shall return to for many a year. John Nunn presents 46 of his own games plus all of his compositions and studies. The games are quite beautifully annotated with many stories to entertain along the way. The last two chapters feature 'The State of The Chess World' and 'Chess Publishing and the Batsford Story', some may view these as a rant against issues affecting John Nunn but personally I found the chapters of interest and helpful in telling the story of this great player. You can not fail to improve your understanding of the game as you play through the games with Nunn as your companion, quite frankly I am astonished that such high quality tuition is available at such a low price. You may well see Nunn picking up another BCF award for this outstanding book. Highly Recommended reading." Michael Blake, http://www.bfcc-online.org.uk/
"A successful work ... in the annotated games, nearly every move is clearly described, whereby even complex positions become comprehensible." - Gerald Berghöfer, www.softsurf.com
"The annotations of the games are very instructive and comprehensible to every player. The emphasis lies without exception on pointing out the critical moment in each game, so that the reader can learn a great deal in addition." - Jerzy Konikowski, Fernschach International
"So buy and enjoy - best with a good cup of coffee, since this book is the finest cream!" - Heinz Brunthaler, Rochade
"All this makes Grandmaster Chess an instructive, entertaining, all-round excellent chess book." - Johannes Fischer, KARL
"No other author analyses GM games with so light a touch, instructive and entertaining at the same time. Highly recommended." - Dr. Erik Rausch, Rochade
"Another outstanding product from the sheer inexhaustible idea-workshop of Dr John Nunn, which can be recommended without reservation to chessplayers of all classes" - Dr. W. Schweizer, Rochade
