Gambit Chess Studio and Android 5 (also known as ‘Lollipop’)

Google are in the process of releasing a major upgrade to Android known as Android 5 (or ‘Lollipop’). This will be available for many, but not all, Android devices.

This upgrade causes a considerable number of apps to break on certain devices, and unfortunately users who download and install the Android 5 upgrade may find that it prevents Chess Studio from working. Either the Chess Studio icon disappears from the device, or the icon remains but touching it gives the message ‘App not installed’. This is due to a conflict between Android 5 and the Adobe Air runtime which is the basis for the development of the app. The conflict is, according to Adobe, due to a bug in Android 5. It appears to especially affect users of the Nexus 7 tablet.

The problem is that thanks to a second bug, Android 5 does not remove the app completely and if you try to re-download the app, you get an ‘error 505’ message because Android believes the app is already installed. Hundreds of other apps have been struck by the same problem.

The good news is that the latest update to Android, version 5.0.1, solves the problem. If you have been experiencing this problem, please perform the update to 5.0.1 as soon as possible. If Chess Studio has been removed by an earlier update to Android 5, you will need to reinstall Chess Studio from the Play Store (your purchases will be automatically be restored).
